Technology to support teaching and learning: to use or not to use?

Research conducted by Concordia University over a 40 year period finds technology enhances the educational experience and supports student achievement. Data gathered from 60,000 elementary school, high school, and post-secondary students compared achievement in classrooms that used computer technology versus those that used little or none. The research team found technology works best when students are encouraged to think critically and communicate effectively.

You can read the quantitative research report here. In addressing the research question: “What is the effect of using computer technology in classrooms, as compared to no technology, to support teaching and learning?” the results suggest "that one of technology’s main strengths may lie in supporting students’ efforts to achieve rather than acting as a tool for delivering content.
